As you might imagine in an area of such spectacular natural beauty, Guildford and its environs are packed with National Trust Properties.
Here is our quick guide to a few of the closest to Mandolay.
A fifteen minute stroll, or 5 minute drive from the hotel is the beautiful Dapdune Wharf. Sitting on the Wey Navigations, the place is packed with things to see and do.
There’s a small adventure playground, a smashing café, and a bookshop, dogs are welcome and between March and November you can book a guided boat trip along the river, and perhaps even learn how Guildford got its name.
A little further afield, around 4 miles from the hotel is Hatchlands Park, with its acres of sweeping parkland and classic English country house.
Built in the 1750s for naval hero Admiral Edward Boscawen it has housed several wealthy families, been a finishing school for girls and even a printing press.
There are 400 acres of rolling parkland and woodland to explore, making Hatchlands one of the largest country estates in the area. You can follow waymarked walks, enjoy the tranquillity of the garden, discover areas of the park partly landscaped by Humphry Repton or bring the family to experience the natural adventure area for children.
On display in the house is the Cobbe Collection, Europe’s largest collection of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers including JC Bach, Chopin and Elgar. An early interior design commission for architect Robert Adam, whose work can be seen in ceilings and fireplaces throughout the house.
And finally for this brief roundup, we have the stunning Polesden Lacey estate, around ten miles from Guildford in Great Bookham.
Polesden Lacey is packed with activities for the whole family with a splendid Edwardian house, glorious grounds including a kitchen garden and children’s play area.
The 1,600 acre estate provides stunning views over the Surrey Hills, and is home to a number of rare birds and butterflies. Regular exhibitions and events take place throughout the year, so please visit the website for details.
Oh, and there’s also a splendid 2nd hand bookshop and an excellent café on site, it is of course dog friendly and there is plenty of parking (free for National Trust members).
These are just a few of the NT properties in the area, for a full list, and details of each attraction, please visit the National Trust website.
