We can think of no better place to start than with the exciting news that Guildford is bidding to be the UK’s first Town of Culture 2028.
We love the confidence shown by Guildford Borough Council who along with partners such as Experience Guildford and the University of Surrey are determined to deliver a year-long celebration of what makes our town so special.
Guildford is a town packed with history and incredible talent, from a 12th-century castle to a world-leading games sector, literary giants to independent bookshops, first class theatre and comedy to fringe events, music festivals to independent venues.

Knight’s Foundation
A few years ago, Mandolay hosted a very special evening with Southampton FC legend, Matt Le Tissier, the event sold out and a great time was had by all.
One key element of the night, along with some wonderful stories and reminiscences from ‘Le Tiss’ was a charity auction. As is often the way with these occasions, bidding was brisk especially for the sporting memorabilia on offer.
However, one lot stood out. A week’s holiday in a specially adapted lodge in Milford-on-Sea in the beautiful New Forest.
The lodge is owned and operated by The Knight’s Foundation and offers free accommodation to disabled and seriously ill children and their families. This week, we bumped into Knight’s Foundation CEO, Nicky Banger, himself an ex-professional footballer who played alongside Matt Le Tissier at Saints, and he told us that since the Lodge opened in 2019, they have given a remarkable 291 holidays to families in need of a break.
