For some towns, July can be a bit sleepy when it comes to entertainment, but not here in Guildford as the town puts on its best togs and steps out in style with some cracking live shows and events.
As always, click on the links for more info and to book tickets.
Let’s kick off with our friends and neighbours across the road at G Live.
When it comes to live experiences, they do not get much bigger than Dinosaur World Live, winner of the prestigious 2024 Olivier Award for Best Family Entertainment. This is a live, interactive event so prepare for sightings of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, Giraffatitan, Microraptor and Segnosaurus…Wow!
We shift gear on the 10th when comedy legend Jimmy Carr hits town with his hilarious Laughs Funny show, it will inevitably sell out, so get tickets while you can.
More family fare on the 26th with the brilliant Fun Kids Science Weekly Live with Dan Simpson bringing weird and cool science to life on stage. Forget the classroom, this is science to make children think, and wonder.
On the subject of family friendly, a quick heads up that In the Night Garden Live is coming to G Live in August, again it will be a sell out so grab tickets while you can.
A truly unique theatrical event is promised at The Yvonne Arnaud this July when Yvonne Arnaud, Guildford Shakespeare Company and an all-star cast present simultaneous productions of The Comedy of Errors and the hilarious new play A Company of Rascals, the story of what goes on when the players leave the stage.
This is an ingenious theatrical event like no other, a genuinely unmissable opportunity to witness brilliance…we urge you to go.
Sara Pascoe:I am a Strange Gloop hits the YA stage on the 13th, we don’t know what the title means but hey, it’s Sara Pascoe so it will be a wonderful evening of comedy from a national treasure in waiting.
From a national treasure in waiting to a genuine legend as Dame Siân Phillips along with Rachel Donovan bring tales of ancient Greece to glorious life in Women and Troy. Based on the plays of Euripides, this stage event has been adapted by author/director David Stuttard, and includes a Q&A with performers and writer.
By Royal Appointment ends a Crackerjack month at The Yvonne Arnaud, and it is another theatrical coup for this wonderful venue. Anne Reid, Caroline Quentin, James Dreyfus and James Whitby are about as good as it gets for an ensemble cast, and this new play, written by Daisy Goodwin gives them more than enough opportunity to show off their brilliance.
‘’By Royal Appointment is a funny, poignant and celebratory new play about the kind of power that only a Queen can wield.’’
Celebrate Guildford is a joint collaboration between Experience Guildford and Guildford Borough Council, with live events taking place in and around town until September. There is loads to see and do, and many of the shows and displays are free of charge.
And finally, a quick mention for our great friends at Guildford Lions, as they host their annual Raft Race on the Wey at the bottom end of town on July 5th. It’s always riotous fun and there will be lots of other stuff going on too, including the famous Duck Dash.
