We will begin our monthly roundup of shows and events with our great friends at Guildford Cathedral, and the commemoration of a very significant milestone in British history.

VE Day 80th Anniversary

Listen out on Wednesday 8th May, 6.30pm as eighty years after Victory in Europe Day, the Cathedral bells will ring out across Guildford in celebration, echoing the joyous sounds heard all over the country in 1945.

And then, on Sunday 11th May at 3.00pm, the Cathedral is hosting the County Service for VE Day. A special service to mark this historic anniversary, open to all, with advance booking available on the Cathedral website.

It’s another month of comedy hits at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, kicking off on May 11th with national treasure and Radio 4 stalwart Mark Steel and his stand-up show ‘The Leopard in My House’, before Nigel Havers hits town with his own hilarious evening which finds the great man ‘Talking B*ll*cks’.

Then it’s the turn of Marcus Brigstocke to tickle the Guildford funny bone on Sunday 18th, as he brings his award winning talents to town in the shape of his brilliant new show ‘Vitruvian Mango’.

Lou Sanders, undisputed star of Taskmaster and countless comedy panel shows is sure to bring the house down with ‘No Kissing in the Bingo Hall’, on May 22nd,  with brilliantly mesmerising Sean Alexander ending the month on a high with ‘Moments in Time’, as he visits town on his sell-out UK tour.

Across the road from Mandolay, our fabulous neighbours at G Live have their own packed month of stellar stand-up shows in May, starting on the 7th, with the brilliant Rob Beckett and his new show ‘Giraffe’.

The 8th sees Katherine Ryan on stage with her show ‘Battleaxe’ while on the 9th, the remarkable Chris McCausland hits the stage with ‘Yonks.’ Chris is always brilliant, but expect him to be on an extra special high after his beloved Liverpool FC just about scraped to the League title in April.

In what must be the best month ever for stand-up comedy in Guildford, other highlights include the hilarious Nick Mohammed on the 13th, Nathan Caton on the 16th, and Jamali Maddix on the 17th.

Nestled beautifully, and brilliantly in between all of this A List comedy is a night of music that’s not to be missed as Andy Bell, of Erasure fame brings his new album ‘Ten Crowns’ to the stage. Andy will be performing plenty of Erasure hits almost certainly including Respect, Blue Savannah, and Love to Hate You.

A quick heads up for July, and the fabulous Guilfest at Stoke Park in Guildford on the 5th and 6th.

Voted as ‘Best Family Festival in the UK’, this year’s line-up includes The Jacksons, Soul II Soul, Leo Sayer, Razorlight, and KT Tunstall as well as Altered Images, and Oddysey.

There’s also a comedy tent, loads of rides and stalls, and appearances from Bluey, and Peppa Pig!
