Valentine’s Day is upon us, and the air is filled with the magic of love, shops are full of cards, chocolates in brightly coloured wrappers, and the price of red roses has gone through the roof.
But what if you’re not in love, or you just don’t want to mark the occasion with expensive gifts, what if you see the whole silly idea as nothing more than an exercise in delusion and self-indulgence?
Well, you are not alone.
Of course, here at Mandolay we have our own special offering for Valentine’s Dinner, and even if we say so ourselves, it is exceptional…please book here if you change your mind and fancy something traditional and exquisite.
But as a bit of fun, we decided to compile a playlist of anti-Valentine’s tunes. This idea was, we must confess, inspired by a genuine list of songs suggested to us for Valentine’s Day, one of which was the brilliant, but distinctly un-lovey dovey smash ‘Nothing Compares 2U’ by Prince (we prefer the Sinead version by the way).
To this classic we will add ‘Love will Tear us Apart’ by those happy funsters, Joy Division and then we’ll go for ‘Poison’ by Alice Cooper, and a bit more up to date with ‘Don’t Need You’ from the aptly, Bullet for my Valentine.
Good Charlotte, ‘I don’t Wanna be in Love’ seems appropriate while ‘Unbearable’ by the Wonderstuff contains the immortal lines ‘I didn’t like you very much when I met you…and now I like you, even less.
Boy oh boy there seems to be an awful lot of songs about misery and heartbreak to choose from, and we haven’t even mentioned The Smiths!
Whatever you are up to this February 14th, have a wonderful time, and if that means a quiet night in listening to sad songs, then go for it, indulge yourself and let us know your ‘favourite’ anti-Valentine’s tunes.
