Now in its 19th glorious year, the annual Guildford Walking Festival will be taking place throughout September, with walks and strolls to suit all ages and abilities.

The month brings together walking groups, individuals and the Guildford Borough Council Community Wellbeing team for a series of wonderful guided events that range from very easy, to really rather challenging, as Community Engagement Advisor Ben Carter explains.

‘The benefits to physical and mental wellbeing of walking are beyond question, and when we add to this the opportunity to meet friends old and new to engage in conversation, it is no wonder that Walkfest has become such an important part of our social calendar.’

Ben continues, explaining a bit more about the month long programme.

‘Guildford is home to a great many walking groups and we are delighted that so many of their members not only join in, but also organise the walks. We are also lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside, offering a huge variety of walks, and talks. The schedule includes walks that start and finish at pubs, riverside walks, and fascinating talks about Medieval Guildford, wildlife walks, and even a ‘muddy boots walk’ around Whitmoor Common!

The walks vary in length from half a mile, to a slightly more ambitious 14 mile ‘trek’ from Guildford to Dorking and of course there will be plenty of opportunities to join the Town Guides for their superb, fact and fun-packed events including ‘Hidden Guildford’ and the intriguing ‘Law & Disorder’.

This really is a celebration of walking and Guildford, the walks are free but you will need to book for most of them. You can check out the full itinerary here.

Happy walking everyone!
